The hair style of high school students has been a controversial issue for many years. The prescribed plain short hair may look tidy, but the insistence on the hair length below the ear lobe in the case of girl students, which is fixed at one centimeter or at most two, is quite unnecessary. Until recently, the Mayor of Tainan had tried to persuade the Ministry of Education to give the high schoolers the carte blanche to determine their own hair styles. It is difficult for us to say if the idea is right or wrong. So far as I am concerned, problems of the young are not confined to such a small matter as hair style; what matters is the reinforcement of the students' moral consciousness, the way they should behave, and the like. The length of their hair or whether they have the right to give it a permanent wave is relatively unimportant. Cleanness and neatness is what really matters. There is hardly anything that stays unchanged all the time. Why doesn't the concerned authority reconsider this hair business? Maybe the bickerings that sour the relations between the military instructors and their students will therefore be gone. By the way, to improve one's appearance is nothing wrong, is it? We all expect to see a new look of the young. Maybe a change in the concerned authority's policy toward the high schoolers' hair style will bring this about.

Today, more and more young people are crazy about western festivals. When western festivals come, they usually go to restaurants or shopping malls to have fun.

Why do the young enjoy western festivals so much? Since they worship everything new, and they can’t resist the temptation. In their opinions, western festivals symbolize the fashion, while our Chinese traditional festivals are out of date. No wonder we always feel so boring during our traditional holidays. If we still turn a blind eye to our traditional festivals, our culture and civilization will disappear someday. Accordingly, it is high time for us to pay close attention to our Chinese festivals.

As a Chinese, we have the obligation to protect our culture and custom. So I think we should celebrate our Chinese festivals by doing some traditional activities. As for western festivals, we needn’t to be too excited about them. We can just send our best wishes to our best friends during those festivals.

nowadays, more and more people like to travel in their holidays。 the other day i read a report about the ways people spend their holidays。 it is reported that in recent yiars several new holiday habits have been developed。 among them, the most interesting one is the growth of the so-called holiday camps。

from the report we can see that in 1990,40 percent of people stayed at home for holidays。 but now the proportion has reduced to 9 percent。 more people go out for fun。 the proportion of camping and traveling abroad was increasing steadily, from 10 percent in 1990 to 38 percent in 20xx, and 12 percent in 1990 to 26 percent in 20xx respectively。 people enjoy the fresh air, clean water and green hills when they go camping in the suburbs。 in 1990,38 percent people enjoyed going to the seaside while in 20xx only 27 percent prefer to go there。 what great changes!

why did those changes appear? i think there are several reasons。 first, it' s because people can afford traveling。 second, people prefer to pursue a high-quality and colorful life。 third, their attitudes to relaxation have changed。 less people want to save much money by leading a simple life。 in short, people's living standard today has been rising greatly。

Falling on the first day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar, the Spring Festival is in fact the Chinese New Year. Before it, people usually give their house a thorough cleaning and do a lot of shopping. On the New Year’s Eve, people come home and the whole family have a big dinner together.

On the New Year’s Day and the few days to follow, people often visit their relatives and friends to give one another their best wishes for the New year. Throughout this festival period firecrackers can be heard everywhere. This festival is the most important festival for the Chinese.

China has the history of more than 5,000 years and we are so proud of the profound culture. Every year, we are so looking forward to spending the holiday during the traditional festivals. They are the important part of Chinese traditional culture. But for young people, the meaning of these festival is fading away.

When young people are asked about the meaning of traditional festival, some of them have no idea. For example, some young people believe that Mid-autumn Festival is to in honor of the ancestors, or it is a day to eat mooncake. Actually, most festivals have been advocated by the commercial ads, and they show people to buy more products to spend the festivals happily. Some ads try to implant people the wrong idea about the meaning of festival, just to attract more customers.

The loss meaning of traditional festivals brings the negative side to the preserve of traditional culture. The mass media should advocate the essence of the festivals, so as to let the young generation learn more about our culture and be proud of it.

  Dear Jim,

I’m very glad that you’ll come to visit China. You asked me about the weather in China. There are four seasons– spring, summer, autumn and winter. Summer is the hottest season of the year. It often rains. And winter is the coldest. Sometimes it snows, especially in the north of China. If you like snow, you can come to China at this time of year. But I think the best time to visit China is in spring or autumn because it is neither too hot nor too cold. It is very pleasant to visit many places of interest in China, such as the Great Wall, the West Lake, Mount Yellow and so on. I believe you will enjoy yourself in China. I can’t wait to see you.

  Best wishes!

  Yours truly,

  John

  How to Protect the Animals

Animals are our friends, but human beings often kill them for meat, fur and money. What should we do to protect them

Our government has done something to protect animals, such as passing laws and setting up some nature reserves (自然保護(hù)區(qū)). Under the laws, we mustn’t hunt or kill these animals or destroy their living conditions. On the other hand, we shouldn’t eat wild animals. Keep them away from our dinner. There will not be wild animals on sale. I think the hunters and killers will become fewer and fewer. Last, we shouldn’t pollute our environment so that animals can have a good living environment. We should stop people from cutting trees down. Without trees, wild animals will lose their home. And we’ll lose our animal friends. All of us should do our best to protect animals.
