　　我上中學(xué)時沒有學(xué)過音標，基本上是跟著教師念，對不對不得而知。有時會鬧出笑話，例如dining一room中的第一個i，不發(fā) [i]，而發(fā)[ai]，但是教師讀成[i]，我們也就跟著讀錯了，后來才糾正過來。上大學(xué)以后改學(xué)俄語，大學(xué)畢業(yè)以后又自學(xué)過一些英語，能閱讀有關(guān)的專業(yè)書籍。但是從來沒有學(xué)過“聽”和“說”，基本上是“啞巴英語”。

　　1979年45歲時第一次隨團去法國和德國參觀。當時我能閱讀自己熟悉的專業(yè)書刊，算是代表團中英語水平比較高的。但一到外國，除了一般的問候語以外幾乎都聽不懂，說不了，所以根本聽不懂技術(shù)講解。對于熟悉的'專業(yè)書面材料，如果是用大寫字母寫成的說明，一時還反應(yīng)不過來，需要在腦子中翻譯成小寫才看得懂。代表團團長還不時地鼓勵我“膽子大一些”。其實哪里是什么膽子大小的問題，聽不懂，說不了，看不懂，哪里來的膽子？

　　在國外期間，我與每一個不會外語的人一樣，口袋里裝著一個紙條，上寫“我住在XXX旅館，請把我送回去�！币苑酪坏┳呤r使用。我當時是某設(shè)計院總工程師，高級工程師，看著這樣的紙條，心里真有一種說不出的被侮辱感，“我這個中國高級工程師和總工程師只有這樣的水平，與文盲差不多，外國人怎么會看得起我們？” 發(fā)憤之心油然而生，回國以后下決心發(fā)奮學(xué)習(xí)，努力提高英語口語能力。
