A stable-companion During My College Days
I have made many friends, most of whom have been kept in my memory, but I have engraved only one of them on my mind deeply until now.It was my stable-companion during my college days.He was an honest and tolerant fellow, and always got along with me sincerey and kindly. When I was in worry,he used to give warm comfort to me; when I was in trouble,he often threw himself into the breach to share my sorrow.I believe he is the best friend of mine in my life.If you want to know who he is,I will tell you the next time.

Like many people in the UK, the team at BBC Learning English have been shocked and saddened by news of the earthquake in Sichuan province. We would like to extend our condolences to those affected by this terrible natural disaster. Below is a special report on the earthquake and the rescue operations taking place.
Rescue efforts are underway in China’s Sichuan province following Monday’s devastating earthquake 災(zāi)難性的地震, which measured 7.9 on the Richter Scale 里氏震級(jí).
According to Xinhua news agency, nearly 15,000 people have died in the disaster, with as many as 24,000 more trapped under rubble 碎石,碎磚 from collapsing buildings and another 14,000 declared missing 申報(bào)失蹤.
Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has visited the area to personally oversee relief work (抗震)救災(zāi)工作, and is flying to the epicentre 震中 of the earthquake today.
Chinese troops have been mobilised 調(diào)動(dòng) to carry out rescue operations and emergency aid 緊急救護(hù) has been air-dropped 空降 into areas that have been cut off by the disaster.
Bad weather has hampered 阻礙 relief efforts and in some cases rescuers have had to trek into the disaster area 受災(zāi)地區(qū) by foot and search for trapped survivors 生還者 by hand as roads have been blocked by debris 瓦礫碎片.
Some residents of the provincial capital 首府 Chengdu have chosen to sleep in tents and government shelters for fear of aftershocks 余震 causing more damage.
One witness in Chengdu told the BBC the city’s population is helping the relief work by donating 捐獻(xiàn) food and water for those affected in the surrounding countryside.
Financial aid 經(jīng)濟(jì)救助 has been pouring in 大量涌進(jìn) from all over China, with the Chinese government pledging hundreds of millions of dollars. Substantial donations from other countries and humanitarian organisations have also been pledged
Although full casualty figures 傷亡數(shù)字 are not yet certain, it is clear that Monday’s earthquake is the worst to strike China since the Tangshan earthquake of 1976.
All people have their own way of being in the world. It is easiest to comprehend this basic yet profound fact when we consider that every human being on the planet occupies a distinct role in the universe. We grow up in different environments, affected by a unique range of influences. The preferences, values, and beliefs we embrace are frequently related intimately to our origins. And the need to individualize our experiences is instinctive, as doing so enables us to cope when we must face challenges on our own. Consequently, each of us has developed a perspective that is uniquely ours. Interacting peacefully and constructively with people from all walks of life is a matter of first understanding where they are coming from. Then we can adjust our expectations so that we avoid making undue assumptions about what they are about.
In the face of emerging interpersonal conflict, it is easy to assume that others are being difficult, unreasonable, or stubborn. We are apt to grow frustrated when someone in our environment does not share our opinions or feel compelled to support us in our endeavors. It is likely that the individual or individuals before us may simply possess differing notions with regard to what is and what is not important in this life. We can ease the tension that exists between us by reaffirming our belief in the fundamental right of all beings to determine their own destinies. To foster a harmonious relationship, we need to do our best to relate to the unique universes they inhabit. And as we discover what makes them tick, our ability to find a mode of interaction that is pleasing to both of us is enhanced.
When there are barriers keeping you from connecting with someone else, think of questions you can ask them to gain a more thorough understanding of their point of view. You may discover that in addition to the differences in perspective dividing you, they are subject to insecurities and other personal issues that influence their way of seeing the world. It is likely that you will never fully grasp the myriad complexities embodied by humanity, but you can go a long way toward encouraging mutually satisfying relations by reaching out to others in the spirit of sympathetic comprehension.
第二天,我又教爺爺學(xué)了apple(蘋果)、banana(香蕉)、noodles(面條)、wonton(餛飩)等,別說,爺爺雖然已過花甲之年,但學(xué)起來有板有眼,極其認(rèn)真。
